Chromat

Date
2021-2025
While completing my Bachelor of Music in Performance, I attempted to understand music even more thoroughly by exploring the visual aspect of music. I wanted to understand whether the influence on empathy was unique to music or it was inherent to multiple art forms. Hence, I researched on the connection between visual art and music through different historical periods to explore.
Furthermore, I decided to develop Chromat, a project through which I taught myself Python and MIDI-programming using libraries such as mido and rtmidi. Chromat converts MIDI performances into generative visual form, tracing dots according to tempo, pitch and articulation. By looping and layering this data, not only did I explore a potential new art form (music-painting) and the connection between visual art and music, but also provided a tool for the examination of form, density and repetition as emergent visual processes.
In hindsight, through the Chromat project, I gained experience in computational representation and data mapping, realizing how much can be done with the extensive information present on MIDI performance recordings.
